Help Plant the Camp Garden

Yes, this is actual produce from last year's Camp Garden!
We have a vegetable garden at our Cub Scout Camp, and it exists for one reason; to teach Cub Scouts and their parents about gardening and growing food. Volunteers are needed to assist by helping plant and tend the garden.  We are currently planning to have group work days in the garden on Sunday afternoons starting on April 6, from 1 PM to 5 PM.  We are inviting Scouts and Parents to participate in these work days.

The Scout Camp Garden is at Cub Adventure Camp in Goochland County.  The address is 1723 Maidens Road, Maidens, VA 23102.  We’re one mile from Goochland Courthouse.  The garden is next to our Nature Center, with water access and bathrooms close by.  The garden was planted for the first time in 2013.  This summer, roughly 1,300 Cub Scouts and parents will attend Adventure Camp, and all of them will have a chance to experience our camp garden.  If you can help out with the garden on April 6, email bill.givler@scouting.org and let us know who is coming.

Joe Orr named Pirate Captain

I am excited to announce that Joe Orr has been named the 2014 Adventure Camp Director.  Joe served at Adventure Camp last summer, starting the season as Assistant Camp Director and moving into the Camp Director role in mid-season.  Joe has a wealth of camp experience.  He served on the staff at Camp T. Brady Saunders for 7 years, and is National Camp School trained in Aquatics and Camp Management.

Joe is an Eagle Scout from Troop 900, and he works full-time for the Heart of Virginia Council as the Executive for Rivers District, which covers 8 counties on the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck of Virginia.  Joe has a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Longwood University, and he's engaged to be married with an October 2014 wedding date set.

As a Cub Scout, Joe earned his Arrow of Light.  He also cites a Cub Scout Camping event with his father as a key experience in Scouting.  "I was a Webelos Scout, and we were at Scout Camp," says Joe, " I remember turning to my father and saying 'This is awesome!  I'm having a great time."

Joe is working hard right now to put together an amazing staff of camp counselors for this summer.  Our hope is that you and your son will also have a great time at Adventure Camp in 2014.
